Sheikh Nayabagabo Salum was formally invested as the new Mufti (Leader) of the Islamic Community of Burundi (COMIBU) in a ceremony at the Ingoma Stadium in Gitega. Chaired by Sheikh Gihete Youssuf, the event was a solemn occasion marked by mutual pledges of support and commitments from both the newly appointed Mufti and the Islamic community.
Addressing the gathering, the new Mufti emphasized the importance of leadership that adheres to the teachings of the Quran. “I pledge that my leadership will be guided by the principles of Islam and will be dedicated to the betterment of our community and our nation,” said Cheikh Nayabagabo Salum. “I will ensure that all initiatives I undertake will be in service of the common good.”
The Islamic community, in turn, expressed their full support for the new Mufti. A public declaration, made during the ceremony, stated that the community would follow the Mufti’s guidance as long as he governed in accordance with Islamic law. “Anyone who opposes his leadership will face the collective judgment of the community and be accountable to Allah,” the statement read.
The new Mufti also outlined an action plan that focuses on inclusive governance and social development. “I promise to visit every provincial Islamic community, listen to their concerns, and work to address their needs,” he said. “I will be like a father to all, ensuring that no one is left behind or discriminated against.”
Sheikh Nayabagabo Salum’s promise of inclusive management echoes his commitment to improving both the social and economic well-being of the community. However, some observers have raised concerns about the practicality of such ambitious initiatives given the diverse challenges faced by the country’s Islamic communities.
The new Mufti’s call for unity and obedience to leadership at all levels was a central theme of his address. “For the common good, we must work together and support our leaders in all areas of life,” he stressed.
The Burundi muslim community have for recent years face struggles and fights on who should be the next mufti as the previous elections was marked with protests and controversial events that led to be nulled and void.
The ceremony, which was attended by members of the Islamic community, government officials, and other dignitaries, underscored the high expectations placed on Cheikh Nayabagabo Salum’s leadership. As Burundi continues to navigate political and social challenges, the new Mufti’s ability to unite and lead the Islamic community will be closely scrutinized.
