The South Sudan East African Community (EAC) Affairs minister and Chairperson of the EAC Council of Ministers Deng Alor Kuol last Thursday announced that an Extra-Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State will be held virtually on April 15th 2024 to consider the appointment of the new EAC Secretary General.
“On 18th March, 2024 I received a letter from the Republic of Kenya giving notice of the withdrawal of Hon. Dr. Peter Mutuku Mathuki as Secretary General of the East African Community,” a statement from the South Sudan EAC minister read.
The EAC Heads of State Extra-Ordinary summit comes as the Kenyan President William Ruto early this month recalled Dr. Peter Mathuki who was the Secretary General of the community for the last three years.
The recall came amid controversy of the misappropriation and mismanagement of the community funds by the Secretary General, the East African Legislative Assembly launched an investigation which is expected to be reveal details of the said $6 million.
The former EAC Secretary General was appointed on March 8th by the Kenyan president as an ambassador to Moscow, Russia pending the National Parliament approval.
Kenya nominated Ms Caroline Mwende Mueke as the Secretary General of the East African Community who is expected to be sworn in mid-April this year during the EAC Heads of State Extra-Ordinary summit.
His Excellency Salva Kir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan and Chairperson of the EAC Summit has requested the Heads of States to hold an extra-ordinary Summit virtually on 15th April 2024 at 3:00 PM (EAT) to be preceded by the EAC Council of Ministers’ session virtually on the same day at 10 AM (EAT) to consider the appointment of Ms Caroline Mwenda Mueke as the Secretary General of the East African Community,” part of the statement from the EAC chair of the council of ministers read.
