The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) has announced a temporary suspension of its planned activities for January-June 2025 due to financial constraints. The decision was made following a meeting of the EALA Commission and Committee Chairpersons on February 6, 2025, which reviewed the Assembly’s calendar.
EALA Speaker Rt. Hon. Joseph Ntakarutimana has initiated discussions with Hon. Beatrice Asukul Moe, Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC) Council of Ministers, and EAC Secretary General H.E. Veronica Mueni Nduva. The aim is to encourage Partner States with outstanding financial contributions to remit their dues in order to facilitate the resumption of EALA activities. A follow-up review is expected within three weeks.
Despite the setback, EALA remains committed to its mission of fostering regional integration through legislation, oversight, and representation. The Assembly is hopeful that ongoing consultations will lead to a resolution, allowing for the swift resumption of its important work.
The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) is an institution of the East African Community, established under Article 9 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community.
