Burundi’s Women’s National team failed to impress in their opening group C match against Botswana as they were thrashed 4-2.
The two sides took on the continental stage for the very first time ever at Moulay El Hassan stadium in Morocco during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (wafcon) 2022 match held on Monday 4th of July.
The swallows were subdued by the Botswana following the 4-2 loss, they are now rocking the bottom of group C with no point gained and with most goals scored against.
This comes after Nigeria was defeated by South Africa by 2-1 in one of the most entertaining matches of Group C.
The game that featured Burundi and Botswana saw in 43rd minutes when Keitumetse Dithebe jersey number 13 gave Botswana a lead after a well-placed strike getting a beautiful combination from her team mates Nondi Mahlasela and Keitumetse Dithebe.
Two minutes into the second half, Mokgabo Thanda released to Refilwe Tholakele and Tholakele grave Lesego Radiakanyo a brilliant ball which gave Botswana a two goal advantage.
In the 52nd minute of the game, Burundi’s Asha Djaffar weaved away into the box, she as the Botswana goalkeeper made a save before Sandrine Niyonkuru scored from a rebound to give the Intamba hope.
Burundi’s hope in search for equalizer were squandered as Botswana’s Refilwe Tholakele restored a two goal lead in the 55th minute, five minutes later Refitwe Tholakele got her brace to make it 4-1.
It was not until the 80th minute, Joelle Bukuru’s swerving ball from a corner kick met Sandrine Niyonkuru to get her brace.
Burundi is expected to return into action on Thursday as they will be locking horns with South while Botswana will be taking on Nigeria.
